We earned an overall score of 91.5.
The median score for ordinary businesses that complete the assessment is currently 50.9.
We focus on the depth of impact we are making, and then scaling that depth across India and the world.
The problems we are working on are complex.
Deep, nuanced solutions are the only way to make permanent progress on them.
(AS OF DECEMBER 2024)
We have recycled over 765,000 packets of MLP which is over 3.3 tons of “unrecyclable” waste diverted from landfill (as of December 2024). This is not a lot, but the way we recycle this waste is more circular, and we can’t wait to scale it.
So far, we have formalized and upskilled 14 former waste-pickers/informal workers into our supply chain, pushing them out of multidimensional poverty and increasing their income an average of 2.5x. Yes, that’s not a lot, but we deeply impact their lives and we can’t wait to scale this too.
We believe that consumption should be more than just circular, it should be spherical: fair, full, and future-ready.
And to keep ourselves accountable, we’ve created the Sphericality Index, a 6-factor visual representation to measure the true impact of our materials and products, and how we can be better. More on that here if you’re curious.
Keeping that in mind, let’s go deeper on what these problems are, how we solve them deeply and holistically, and where we can do better.

problem 1: LOW RECYCLING RATES OF PLASTIC WASTE, ESPECIALLY FLEXIBLE

Problem 2: Abysmal conditions for waste-workers / informal-workers
How We Are Solving It
Where We Can Do Better
Here are some of the former waste-pickers / informal workers who we have formalised, up-skilled and pushed out of multi-dimensional poverty:

Jayshri is the first informal worker we employed at Ashaya. Her monthly income has increased 3x after she started working here. She also has a salaried working bank account now. Her husband ran away many years ago, and she now supports her daughter who’s in school, and her mother. At Without, she helps with shredding, washing and early processing of waste

Rahul is a son of a former waste-picker. He has a household of 7 members where he is the primary earning member. Since working with us, his wages have increased 1.2x. At Without, he also helps with the extrusion process and with setting up the patent-pending chemical reaction which helps us process packets of chips.

Seema’s income has increased 2x here at Without. Her in-laws are former waste-pickers, and before this, she worked as a house-keeper at a nearby university. She is the sole breadwinner in a house of 2 children and where her husband suffers from severe health issues.
At Without, she helps with post-processing of moulded sunglasses frames and arms, and with cutting of the lenses. She’s also an expert weaver and helped weave this dress which made it on to the ramp at Lakme Fashion Week.

Problem 3: POST-CONSUMER, REJECTED, TORN, SOILED, MIXED TEXTILE WASTE
how we are solving it
Our waste comes from the
Kashtachi Kamai Scrapshop in the Nana Peth area in Pimpri, Pune, India.
12-14 women collectively own and manage this scrap shop, all part of the KKPKP & SWaCH Cooperative.
They elect their leaders, decide how profits are allocated, and support one another, creating a strong community.
These women gather waste from both the streets and large corporations, including collecting multi-layered plastics (MLP), such as chip packets, exclusively for us – because no one else buys them.
We, however, pay them a 3x premium for it, ensuring their efforts are rewarded.
