Mixed Textiles Recycling Technology

The clothes we wear are fuelling the plastic crisis. Every year, 92 million tonnes of textile waste
are dumped or burned. Sixty percent of it is synthetic. The most problematic waste is mixed, soiled, torn textiles, like underwear, carpets, and fabric scraps, that even waste collectors reject.
This waste, typically headed straight for landfills or incinerators, represents the worst of textile pollution. But we have found a way to extract raw materials from the worst of it. And we do it ethically.

The Challenge

Mixed textile waste is too complex. So it is ignored. Post-consumer clothes are messy. Polyester is blended with cotton. Metal zips and elastics get stuck. They are dirty, shredded, stained, and stitched in layers.

Textile waste is a plastic problem and a people problem.
The people who sort our waste are unprotected, underpaid, and invisible. Most are women. Most are informal.

We extract polyester from complex textile waste and make it new. We have built a proprietary chemo mechanical textile recycling process that breaks apart complex fabric waste and isolates the good stuff.

VerdiPTA is our 100% recycled Terephthalic Acid, extracted from “impossible-to-recycle” plastic waste such as multi-layered plastic, mixed blended textiles and coloured PET bottles. This material traditionally comes from fossil fuels, but we are
extracting it out of waste, waste that no one generally recycles.
